Bin collections hit by big freeze Print E-mail

THE STREETS of Redditch have been lined with rubbish bins for over a week now after the snow played havoc with waste collection services.
Around half of the bins which should have been emptied were left full, with 18,000 residents not receiving the service due to the risky conditions.

Redditch Borough Council staff were delivering information leaflets on Wednesday (January 13) to advise residents of changes to grey and green bin collections.

But they were unable to collect the bins which had been due this week (commencing January 11) due to more heavy snowfall.
Residents have now been asked to place out their grey and green bins for collection from 7.30am each day, as the council was attempting to collect them at some point during the week.

Homes which should have had their grey bins emptied the week before (January 4) should bring their bins back in as they will be provided with sacks to be collected on their next scheduled collection day if the road conditions have improved by then.
Any extra recycling from homes where green bins should have been collected in the week commencing January 4 should be placed in suitable open containers which can be put outside with the bin on their next collection date.

Extra recycling can also be taken to any of the 21 recycling sites across the borough.
Residents in Studley have fared a little better as waste collection crews were able to get out on Wednesday to empty some grey bins, but bins were not being collected from side roads or roads on an incline.

Stratford District Council was hoping to clear the backlog over the following days, with residents being requested to leave their grey and green bins out each day from 7.30am, with any extra rubbish placed in suitable containers.

A spokesperson said: "The council would like to apologise for the disruption to the current service and hope residents bear with us during this spell of winter weather and be assured that we are committed to resuming a normal service as soon as possible."
