A MAN pulled an axe from his waistband after a police officer tried to search him in Redditch town centre.
Shane Lee walked towards the policeman who backed away before a police dog was released and helped overpower the defendant.
A CCTV film of the terrifying incident in Queen Street was shown at Worcester Crown Court.

Lee, aged 22, of Lilac Close, Redditch, was jailed for 12 months after pleading guilty to possession of a weapon, assault on police and obstructing police.
Recorder Martin Butterworth said serious injuries could have followed the production of an axe in a public street.

He added: "The event must have been very frightening, but the officer persisted in his attempts to arrest you. You indicated by your gestures that if he came close you would hit him."
The incident began on January 13 this year after a CCTV operator believed that drug dealing was going on at 12.30am.

The cameras tracked Lee and a friend before two officers arrived and parted them for a drug search, said Kerry Moreton, prosecuting.
Lee held the axe to his side and issued verbal threats. But he dropped the weapon when he saw the police dog with its handler come on the scene.
He claimed he bought the axe to deal with tree roots and had collected it from a pub that night. No drugs were found.

He had previous convictions for threatening behaviour, resisting police, criminal damage and receiving stolen goods.
Defence counsel Jason Aris said his life had been blighted by difficult times since he was 12 and alcohol problems.
